Both systematic and unsystematic reviews agree that NICE guidance is the best available healthcare guidance in the world and mental health guidance has had a major role in establishing the reputation of this institution.  One of the most important members of this family is Depression in adults: recognition and management (CG90).   Following over two years of preparatory work a new set of guidelines for major depression is about to be released.  Depression is the major mental health problem in terms of burden of disease and it touches the majority of lives in our society.  The new guidance will therefore affect many of our lives and a full discussion of its findings and recommendations and the implications of these is clearly merited.  This one-day conference will bring together national experts representing key approaches to depression, each of whom will have an opportunity to comment on the new guidance and identify strengths as well as problematic areas.  Experts by experience will also participate in all panels.  We hope that the views of both the speakers and the audience can be summarised and integrated as further feedback to the authors of the guidance as well as NICE.
