The 2016 version of ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and other Structures, includes a new chapter for tsunami actions and effects. The ASCE 7-16 standard has now been published and has been adopted by the International Code Council for inclusion in the 2018 version of the International Building Code, IBC-2018, used throughout the United States. It is also being considered by various countries for adoption into their local codes. Concurrently, significant advances are being made in fundamental tsunami engineering which will shape forthcoming design codes. This course is delivered by Professor Ian Robertson from University of Hawaii at Manoa, lead author of ASCE 7-16, who will provide an overview of the new tsunami design provisions, and examples on how to use these in the design of coastal buildings. This will be followed by new research developments in tsunami engineering made by UK researchers at UCL, HR Wallingford and London South Bank University.
