This course is a taught module which combines face-to-face lectures, seminars and practical workshops with on line e-learning learning activities. The module is designed for physiotherapists and medical doctors who wish to further develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of the prevention and management of sport and performance specific injuries and selected medical conditions for children and adolescent athletes participating at different levels of sport and performance activities across a range of abilities and disabilities.

Topics covered in the course will vary slightly from year to year but will generally include:

Screening and analysis of injury and health risk factors.

Aetiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of sports and performance related injuries and medical conditions.

Advanced clinical reasoning and review of relevant medical investigations, clinical assessment techniques and outcome measures.

Advanced management and injury prevention strategies.

Psychological and nutritional aspects of managing young athletes.

Ethical and medico legal aspects of working with young athletes.

This course runs for 6 days and is supported by online e-learning activities.

The module can be chosen as a core component of the Postgraduate Paediatric Physiotherapy programme at UCL. Participants may also undertake the course as a discrete unit for CPD or, if assessed, may use the 15 credits towards completion of the MSc or Diploma at UCL.


Assessment: 2 hour unseen online MCQ and 1 hour OSCE 27th & 28th June 2018
