This course provides a molecular overview of normal human development, working systematically through the organ systems and highlighting mechanisms by which congenital malformations arise. It includes lectures, tutorials and laboratory visits.


Examples of areas that will be covered include:


  • Nervous system; spina bifida
  • Endocrine system; pituitary dysplasia and tumours
  • Heart; structural abnormalities
  • Bone; skeletal dysplasia and dysmorphology
  • Eye; retinal degeneration
  • Muscle; muscular dystrophy
  • Kidney; cysts and obstruction
  • Adrenals; cortical and medullary defects
  • Gastro-intestinal tract; innervation and Hirschprung’s disease


This course can be taken as a taster course or as a short course. Participants who successfully complete an ICH taster course are assessed and can gain UCL credit when they register for a full UCL postgraduate programme. They can also request a certificate of attendance if they so wish. Taster students wishing to convert credits earned at UCL to a Certificate, Diploma or Degree programme through ‘Accreditation of Prior Learning’ must apply within 5 academic years of taking the taster module. Participants who successfully complete a short course at ICH receive a certificate of attendance, but they are not assessed and do not receive UCL credit.


Short course participants need only register through the UCL Online Store to attend. Taster course participants will be required to complete a supplemental application form after completing their online registration.
