Have we put the dyslexia myth to bed?


Children vary in the ease with which they learn to read. Some need only the briefest exposure to books to crack the code; others struggle for years despite skilled help from expert teachers.  The key task for professionals is to identify reading difficulties early  and put  plans in place as quickly as possible.


This session will explore what we mean currently by dyslexia, identify characteristics of dyslexia and suggest evidence informed recommendations to identify and support children struggling with reading and spelling.  We will look at resources such as the flow chart towards a graduated response to supporting children with dyslexia for classroom teachers from the Dyslexia-SpLD Trust and the Communication Supporting Classroom Observation Tool. 


This course is for practitioners who work in a Primary setting.


You will come away with signposts to a range of useful resources and practical strategies to use in the classroom.


The course lecturer is Gill Brackenbury, Director of the UCL Centre for Inclusive Education.


This course will take place on Thursday 8th February 2018 from 1pm to 4pm at UCL Institute of Education, Emerald Street, London WC1N 3QS.
