Who is this course for?

SENCOs who are currently studying for or who have achieved the PG Cert National Award for Special Education Needs Co-ordination, senior leadership team and teachers interested in SEND.


Why is this course important?

The identification and assessment of pupils with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities is a crucial part of the SENCO role. Since ‘School Action’ and ‘School Action Plus’ were merged to become a single ‘SEN Support’ category, there has been increased scrutiny on how pupils are identified and monitored. This course will provide tools to SENCOs and educational professionals with a SEND focus to help them meet this challenge.


What will the course focus on?

We will use a structured framework to consider school-wide processes of identification and ongoing assessment. The framework supports school-based professionals, including Senior Leadership Team, SENCOS, Inclusion Managers and teachers who may be working without the benefit of a formal diagnosis for pupils in school. It is arranged across the four statutory categories of need and operates as a ‘road map’ for ongoing provision planning using the ‘Graduated Response to Need’ approach as required by the SEND Code of Practice (2015).
