Description

Do you know children who struggle with handwriting, scissors, organisation, attention? This course will enable you to understand what causes such difficulties, and which strategies you can implement to help.

Course overview

This course will be an opportunity to learn about co-ordination difficulties which are common for children. It will include information about Developmental Coordination Disorder (an umbrella term which is now preferred over dyspraxia); what the diagnostic criteria are; and when a referral should be made.  We will cover a broad range of activities that children participate in at school (handwriting, scissor tasks, ruler tasks, planning and organisation, attention, dressing and using cutlery) and we will look at the fine and gross motor difficulties which may cause children to find these activities tricky. We will then focus on intervention through looking at both class wide strategies and individual strategies.

Course Content

  • Criteria for Developmental Coordination Disorder and the Impact it has on a child.
  • Red flags for realising a child has motor difficulties.
  • Pencil grasps and enabling an effective tripod grasp for writing.
  • Strategies for organising and developing writing skills.
  • Task based analysis of everyday skills (scissors, dressing, cutlery skills, ruler skills, organisation) that enable appropriate strategies to be put in place.
  • Use of equipment in enabling motor skills.
  • Strategies to help attention and concentration.
