Knowledge of core number concepts is crucial for understanding why learners get stuck when learning Maths. Even something as simple as counting requires sophisticated understanding and working memory in order to remember:


  • That ‘counted’ items should be grouped together and kept separate from the group that still needs to be counted;
  • To recognise and understand that this group changes every time you count;
  • That as one more is added to the 'counted' group, one must be removed from the 'yet to be counted' group, while at the same time a particular linguistic utterance is allocated to each counted object.


Any of these steps can potentially cause difficulty for a pupil. For example, a typical error often seen is when pupils count 'ninety, twenty' mistaking the sound of 'ninety' for the sound of 'nineteen'.


This course will use concrete, manipulable materials to get inside the mind of a pupil with numeracy difficulties and experience the potential pitfalls that lurk in even the simplest seeming numerical concepts. We will cover numerical concepts including subitising, estimating, sequencing, characterising and part/whole relationships. Then we will explore the role of task analysis, metacognition and problem solving in supporting pupils to make sense of numerical concepts for themselves.
