This volume consists of the papers given at a symposium on ‘Women in Finalnd’, held at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London, on 5 June 1991. The opening address on that occasion, ‘Women and Society in Finland’, was given by Dr David Kirby, Reader in Modern History at SSEES. For this volume a survey of ‘The Position of Women in Twentieth-Century Finland’ has been written by Dr Paivi Setala.
