Teksty I Podteksty: Polish Language in its Cultural Context – A Handbook and Reader
Category: Literature and Culture
This collection of texts draws from a wide variety of sources (principally newspapers and magazines) to illustrate the kind of material Polish people read every day, and some of the issues and topics that concern them. In portraying the changing picture of Polish life, they represent a variety of styles, opinions and subjects. These range from the renaming of streets to erase the communist legacy, Polish-German relations, the relations between Church and State, the changing urban landscape and the changing role of women, to the difficult moral and practical problems posed by transition to a new democracy and free-market economy, as well as problems of defining Poland’s place in the new Europe. Among this there is humour, there are lonely hearts, and texts which feature well-known figures who have played a prominent role in Poland’s cultural and intellectual life.
Texts in Polish with notes on the language/vocabulary and background such as on cultural and social references in English.
