Detailed Description

The outcome of a specialist conference held in Prague in 1999, this book breaks away from the usual approach of EU eastwards enlargement to look at this process from the other direction - from the point of view of those preparing for membership. Contributors discuss the complexities of the larger Europe which seems simultaneously inevitable yet at the same time extraordinarily difficult to comprehend. Avoiding technicalities the contributors focus on broad, far-reaching issues. The three main themes, chosen because of the implications for the West, are law (as rule, bargain, or aspiration); ethnicity, nationalism, citizenship and sovereignty; and the tension between continuity and change.
