K46 CLEAPSS: Reduced and Micro-scale Chemistry

A one-day course for teachers and technicians

Practical procedures for pupils using conventional equipment are often time-consuming and left out of teaching, consequently lowering pupil expectations of secondary school science. Small-scale chemistry is quick, saves on chemicals and offers variety in presentation.

Course Description

The course covers indicators, electrolysis, and precipitation, iron/sulfur reactions, working with toxic gases and carrying out small-scale vigorous reactions. This workshop requires a laboratory because participants will carry out the procedures themselves. It is intended for teachers but technicians are also welcome.

Observations by uses of these techniques appear to show that there is an improvement in classroom management and also pedagogue advantages, which can help dispel many of the misconceptions in the understanding of chemistry.
