DescriptionELAN Bespoke Training 1-on-1: DCAL is pleased to offer 1-on-1 training in use of the multimedia annotation tool ELAN (https://tla.mpi.nl/tools/tla-tools/elan/). Training is provided by a member of the BSL Corpus team (http://www.bslcorpusproject.org/team/), in British Sign Language (BSL) or English. Note: costs here are for 1-on-1 training, delivered at DCAL. ASL/English or IS/English interpreting can be provided at extra cost; please contact us for a quote. If you are interested in bespoke training for a group, and/or bespoke training online via Skype – again, please contact us for a quote. If you have video and/or audio data that you want to learn how to transcribe/annotate in ELAN from scratch, we recommend either the Quick Introduction to learn the basics or Detailed Introduction where we work with you and your own data. If you have video and/or audio data and also a separate text transcript that you would like to import and time-align, we recommend the Detailed Introduction. Annotations can be typed freely or categorized e.g. perhaps you want to focus on only using certain values for annotations to describe a segment, in which case you can use a CV (controlled vocabulary). The linguistic type you pick will depend on how a tier is classified.
A limited set of possible annotations you define and can use in a tier which appear in drop-down menus.
Being able to search annotations in one or a group of files and how to search within a particular set of files (user-defined domain).
Gathering statistics from selected tiers: occurrences, frequency, duration etc
Importing transcripts from a CSV or tab-delimited text file(s) and exporting annotations into a CSV file (Excel)
Modifying a template file and importing any new additional tiers (even if it includes a CV) to your file
Other more advanced topics (available ad hoc on hourly basis after 2-hour and/or 4-hour Introduction, using student’s own video, audio and/or text data): £49/hour
Understanding the relationships between these tiers, why are they used and how they are managed.
Finding annotations in three related tiers, understand how to make constraints on duration, time slot and how search strings are combined.
Search and replace basic annotations & how to search and replace annotations that have special characters (slash, hyphens, brackets, caret etc)
Combine the contents of two separate transcription files into a single file.
