2-hour Quick Introduction (using DCAL sample data): £83

• Brief introduction of ELAN and what it is
• Inserting video/s (which format is best used, how to align media files if more than one video is used)
• Saving files
• Changing or updating the associated media files
• Adding tiers (for basic Annotation only)
• Manipulation of tiers i.e. deleting, re-naming, moving, active tier etc
• How to use the control features (play, frame x 1, x 10, selection mode, beginning and end of crosshair)
• Segmentation
• Annotation work: Creating, modifying, merging, duplicating, deleting for naming and the annotation length itself
• Shifting annotations
• Using the right hand feature; Grid, Text and Video Controls only
• Basic search function (using a few sample files already pre annotated)
• Basic search and replace function
• Exporting annotations to CSV/Excel – basic exports 

4-hour Detailed Introduction (using either DCAL video sample data, or student’s own video, audio and/or text data): £182

All of the topics included in 2-hour session in addition to:

• Linguistic types

Annotations can be typed freely or categorized e.g. perhaps you want to focus on only using certain values for annotations to describe a segment, in which case you can use a CV (controlled vocabulary). The linguistic type you pick will depend on how a tier is classified.

• CV (Controlled Vocabulary)

A limited set of possible annotations you define and can use in a tier which appear in drop-down menus.

• Adding & creating a template file with all linguistic types, CV etc
• Multiple file search

Being able to search annotations in one or a group of files and how to search within a particular set of files (user-defined domain).

• Annotation statistics

Gathering statistics from selected tiers: occurrences, frequency, duration etc

• Importing and exporting data

Importing transcripts from a CSV or tab-delimited text file(s) and exporting annotations into a CSV file (Excel)

• Importing tiers from a new template file

Modifying a template file and importing any new additional tiers (even if it includes a CV) to your file

• Any other pressing issues that student has or queries in relation to their data

• More detailed 1-to-1 consultation with any of the above. Specific topics to be negotiated but could include for example:
• Parent and child tiers

Understanding the relationships between these tiers, why are they used and how they are managed.

• Multiple file search using multiple layer search

Finding annotations in three related tiers, understand how to make constraints on duration, time slot and how  

search strings are combined.

• Search and replace annotations

Search and replace basic annotations & how to search and replace annotations that have special characters (slash, hyphens, brackets, caret etc)

• Merging transcriptions

Combine the contents of two separate transcription files into a single file.
