Primary to Secondary English Grammar

This course is specially designed for secondary school teachers who want to help their pupils bridge the gap between primary and secondary English grammar. The course focuses on how grammar is taught at KS-2 based on the national curriculum, and how teachers at KS-3 can maintain continuity that helps pupils with their non-fiction reading and writing in English and other subjects.

Course Description

Overview

The new national curriculum requires schoolteachers to teach English grammar, which is tested at primary school.

At secondary school, there is not explicit, statutory test of grammar knowledge. This can mean that there is less of a focus on grammar.

Further, the national curriculum contains changes in grammar terminology. Teachers at secondary level may be teaching grammar in a way that does not coincide with the current national curriculum and teaching at primary schools.

On this online course, you'll learn about grammatical subject knowledge that is required at primary and that should ‘bridge the gap’ for secondary pupils in their non-fiction reading and writing.

Content

  • An overview of grammar as conceived in the current national curriculum
  • Requirements and reasons for teaching grammar at secondary and primary level
  • Important grammar for pupils to know
  • Common misconceptions and changes in terminology
  • How grammar can be practically used to improve reading and writing

This course takes the form of a half-day, online webinar. You instructor will guide you through the core principles and techniques. There will be plenty of opportunities for trying activities, questions and discussions.
