Division of Surgery

Division of Surgery and Interventional Sciences

The Division of Surgery and Interventional Science is one of six Divisions and Institutes located within the UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences.

With a long tradition of excellence in both surgical and basic science, the Division encompasses three research themes: Tissue and Energy; Nanotechnology; and Materials and Tissue. Our aim is to understand the causes of human disease and develop innovative therapies and technology to improve the quality of life of the people around us. All three of the research themes closely align with one of the Division’s campuses in London – Bloomsbury, Royal Free and Stanmore, respectively.

The Division integrates basic, translational and clinical research through academic and clinical collaborations both within and outside of UCL with NHS Trusts (including University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH), the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust, the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH), and Whittington Health), the Department of Health, the Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research and the Royal Veterinary College. Cross-faculty research within UCL is vital to the mission of the Division.

The Division considers research and teaching of equal importance and fosters a culture of synergy, where pioneering research should inform the provision of teaching. Having each of the Division’s research themes physically located at a partner hospital allows for students to work and study directly alongside scientists and clinicians, offering an enhanced research and teaching experience.

The Division is fully committed to creating and sustaining an environment where research and teaching excellence are fostered and celebrated - this will be an integral element to our success.
