Chemical Engineering (F43)

Chemical Engineering

Situated in the heart of London on the main campus of UCL (University College London), the department is one of the top research and teaching Chemical Engineering departments in the UK, achieving world class standing.

Research is a core activity in the department, and it covers a broad range of scales from the molecular to the complex systems level. We aim to create pioneering breakthroughs in science and technology and seek solutions to Grand Challenges (such as energy, materials, sustainable manufacturing, health and environment), based on significant advances in fundamental knowledge. To this end, we collaborate widely with other departments in UCL Engineering, Chemistry and beyond, as well as various academic and industrial research groups.

CPD Course

F43 Introduction to Automation and Robotics: Digitalising the Lab

Description

This three-day Continuing Professional Development course delivers a structured, practice driven introduction to laboratory digitalisation.

Designed for scientists and technicians, as well as managers and professionals responsible for driving digital transformation, this course offers an engaging programme introducing AI and machine learning, automation, and robotics, and crucially how these technologies work together within the modern digital laboratory.

Delivered within UCL’s brand new facilities, the course allows for unique hands-on experience and an in-depth introduction into lab digitalisation. Participants will gain practical exposure to, for example, automated protocol development, liquid handling robots, robotics enabled material synthesis, Python and LabVIEW for automation, and examples of high throughput experimentation. Learning directly from UCL academics actively teaching and researching these fields, and connecting with industry partners, the course blends theory, demonstrations, coding sessions, and practical group work, enabling participants to build competency in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting automated laboratory workflows.
