Genetics Evolution and Environment (F99)F99 Biodiversity Futures Summer SchoolDescriptionThis summer school provides a short introduction to emerging skills and approaches relevant to careers in ecology, in industry, government, NGOs or research. It is intended as a taster course for students considering further study or employment in the field. The programme will cover a selection of next-generation methods, including the use of artificial intelligence for environmental data analysis, technologies for ecological monitoring (such as remote sensing and automated sensors), and environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches to biodiversity assessment. It will also introduce applied frameworks such as biodiversity net gain, providing context on how ecological knowledge is used in planning, policy, and development. Sessions will combine lectures, demonstrations, and practical components where appropriate, with an emphasis on illustrating how these methods are currently applied in research and practice. In addition to technical content, the course will include an overview of different career pathways within ecology. Guest speakers from a range of sectors will give short talks outlining their roles and career trajectories. Opportunities for informal discussion and networking will be incorporated throughout the programme to allow participants to engage with speakers and peers. The course is designed to provide participants with a general understanding of current developments in ecology and to support informed decision-making about future study and career options.
