Between 1998 and 2009 archaeological investigations at Shardlow Quarry, Derbyshire were carried out by Birmingham Archaeology, Trent and Peak Archaeology and Northamptonshire Archaeology. Detailed Description
Between 1998 and 2009 archaeological investigations at Shardlow Quarry, Derbyshire were carried out by Birmingham Archaeology, Trent and Peak Archaeology and Northamptonshire Archaeology. These investigations revealed the complex fluvial and archaeological context of the River Trent. In particular the discovery of two Bronze Age logboats and associated metalwork, including swords and axes, demonstrated that far from being a marginal area the site was an important focus for a range of activities in the prehistoric period. The investigations also demonstrated that the river was an important mechanism of transportation as well as an important food resource, with the discovery of multiple fishing structures dating from the Bronze Age to the Anglo-Saxon period.
An important facet of the work at Shardlow was the recovery of environmental sequences from multiple palaeochannels. The analysis of this material demonstrated a complex series of fluvial processes at work at the site throughout the mid Holocene. This volume draws together a wide-ranging dataset, including the work of the late Dr Chris Salisbury, to provide a comprehensive account of human activity at the site in a landscape context.
