Course Description

A Contemporary Painter’s ‘Conversation’ with Traditional Indo-Persian Painting

This practical painting course begins by taking inspiration from the specialism of traditional Indo-Persian (miniature) paintings. These beautiful paintings and jewel-like manuscripts serve as a creative starting point to the week. The aim of the course is to offer an introduction to key skills from this tradition, with a view as to how participants may explore them in a personal project. Your tutor will guide you through two days of linear, perspectival and colour exercises from the Indo-Persian painting tradition. Particular emphasis is put on the use of line as a container of form; composition and design; the use of multiple perspectives and the transference of drawings into paintings. The following 3 days are a blend of further specialist demonstrations and exercises with 1-1 tutorials and discussions, supporting each participant to build a personal project around these traditional techniques. By the end of the week you will have a painting, either finished or in progress, as well as ideas of how traditional arts can inform your contemporary practice.

Tutor Vaishali Prazmari has extensive experience of Indian, Mughal and Persian painting (sometimes known as miniature painting or manuscript painting and illumination) as well as Chinese and East Asian painting techniques which she blends with her contemporary oil painting practice and techniques.
